Couples Therapy In Longwood, FL
At Togetherness Counseling in Longwood, FL, we believe that couples come in all different sizes, shapes, colors, and creeds. We do not discriminate against any couple. Our founder, Tara Spears, is passionate about her work with the LGBTQ population in and outside of the counseling office. We also welcome poly and open relationships for couples therapy. Our goal is to assist you in having the relationship with your partner that you have always wanted. We do not decide what that is but work with you to determine what that looks like for the two of you. Based on our experience there are a few things that are important for you to know:
- Couples counseling is hard. It requires the ability to hear the pain and disappointment you have brought to someone you love.
- We are not here to identify one of you as the problem and will not attack you.
- We do not like to address couple issues in individual sessions. While we do on occasion and with good reason meet with a member of the couple individually, we will address individual goals during that time.
- Typically couples wait for many years before they come in for couples counseling. This means that the amount of ground to cover may be vast.
- It is not unusual to address hurts from 10 years ago in session, especially if the event shapes how your partner sees you today.
- A couple relationship is built off of two people. Whatever your relationship is today, you both made it this way.
- We will not work with you as a couple if there is a history of domestic violence. We will work with you to create a plan of care that addresses safety prior to working with the couple relationship.
Our work with couples is relational at its core. (Go figure). We are interested in helping you to understand ways in which you cannot connect emotionally with effective couples therapy techniques. While there is a time and place for skills-based education, we have found that unless partners feel safe to be vulnerable with one another, skills-based techniques are largely ineffective. That’s why we often recommend communication therapy for couples in Longwood, FL. At Togetherness Counseling, we work with couples to address a variety of issues to include, but not limited to:
- Infidetlity
- Communication and conflict resolution
- Trauma histories in one or both partners
- Betrayal
- Life transitions
- In-law disputes
- Sexual dysfunction
- Chronic illness and pain
